Mom is home!

Dad e-mailed me that Mom came home today.

Alas, I have not been able to visit since Mom left the hospital.
I am on a business trip out of town, so I am not sure when I will be able to visit.

Mom out of hospital, in isolation in a rehabilitation center

Dad called me to let me know Mom has been taken out of the hospital.
She has been taken over to Henry Ford Continuing Care at 25375 Kelly Rd, Roseville, MI 48066.  It was formerly called Rosevilla, between 10 Mile Rd. and Frazho Rd on Kelly Rd.  The room number number is 142.  She is in isolation. We will have to wear gown and mask when go visit her.  It seems the rehab center is more cautious than the hospital was about the meningitis spreading to other patients.

Mom received Avon soap from volunteer for Mother's Day

Mom seemed to be in fairly good spirits today.  Rather than visiting today, I gave her a phone call.
She seemed completely normal.

A volunteer gave Mom and her roommate a bottle of Avon liquid shower soap.  Mom really appreciated it, and was impressed with the expense.

Mom's doctor was there today.  Mom was very surprised to see him on a Sunday, and on Mother's Day.  He did not spend long, but confirmed that it was meningitis, and that the upcoming weeks of antibiotics would clear it up.  It is unclear exactly when Mom will move to a rehab center, but it might be as soon as tomorrow, Monday.

Mom did not mention being nervous in the hospital at night, and I decided to not bring it up.  Since she did not mention it, and she was in good spirits, I take it to mean she had an OK night.

Mom stuck at hospital, but hopefully OK

Mom is slightly better than yesterday, which is to say apparently all better, but still a bit confused at times.  The confusion mainly seems to be about recent events that she was confused about earlier, and seem to have gotten set in her memory incorrectly.  Things such as when she entered the hospital this time.

Mom really did not want to spend the night in the hospital alone tonight.  She has become nervous about that.
However, she does not have a choice.  It was hard on Dad to be thinking about leaving her alone.
We brought a knitting project and a word search book for Mom from their home, so hopefully having somethings to keep her mind occupied will help her pass the time without dwelling on her being lonely or her nervousness.

Jodi and I looked over the house a bit while picking up the items for Mom.  Only one item stood out as unusual, and that could have happened since Mom was in the hospital.  The freezer door was wedged open, having an extension cord that got stuck between the seal..  So all the food was thawed out, only slightly below room temperature.  I removed the cord, and shut the door, but did not make the time to clean out the freezer yet.  I am not sure how I will make time to empty that out with everything else going on.

Mom still improving, but rate slowing.

The doctors seem to pretty much have decided it was viral meningitis.   Mom needs around 2 weeks of antibiotics, so she will have to go to a rehab center when she is ready to leave the hospital, which we have some hopes will be in a few days.

Today Mom's mind seemed more clear.  Dad thought she was a little out of it when she was tired, but overall doing better.
Mom is still causing trouble with keeping tubes in her.  The hospital put another pick-line in her, and she almost pulled that one out too.  If mess this one up, will give a more complex, deeper one.  Hopefully that can be avoided.
Physically, Mom was able to walk around the hospital halls today.  So I think she has gotten pretty close to normal there.

Tomorrow afternoon I plan on checking over the house to see if any mold, spoiling food, or other possible contributing factors can be identified.

Mom physically improved but mentally slightly confused

Mom was completely free from IV tubes this afternoon.  The good news its she did not need them constantly.  The bad news is she still should have them sometimes.  However she pulled them out by fidgeting I am guessing.
Mom was able to get out of bed and walk around the room normally.  She ate a full dinner on her own without mishap.  So physically she seems very good.
She is talking normally, and interacting well.  She was frequently confused about where she was though.  She wondered a couple times why it was not time to go home yet.  A few other times she would get up to put something away thinking she was at home, and only realizing her mistake after 30 seconds out so.
So she has definitely improved faster than last time, but her mind has not caught up yet.
The probable diagnosis is a viral infection.  We are still during to figure out likely sources.  Dad has no ideas.  I have too many ideas of things not the healthiest, but nothing that has changed within the last two years.  So we are hoping some more test results will give more details on the possible infection path.

Mom getting healthy and restless

Dad and I continue to be greatly encouraged by the rapid progress Mom is making.

Mom is talking normally, and remembers her visitors from yesterday.  Earlier in the day, Dad had a little while in which he thinks she was confused about who he was.  I wonder if that was just sleepiness.  She was able to eat some of a hospital regular dinner, although she spilled some.

She sometimes is uncomfortable, and in trying to make herself comfortable, she has pulled at the tubes in her arm and elsewhere.  As that is dangerous, the hospital has had to keep her tied down.  Not to mention that she also tried to get out of bed on her own without supervision.  So Mom gets frustrated with the restraints, but said that she is only uncomfortable for brief times.

Mom was saddened to learn of her brother passing away.  Mom and Dad discussed last week that Uncle Ed's  end was probably near.  Ed O'Hare died last night, 5/8/2012.  While not a surprise to her, she still feels bad for Uncle Ed's children and rest of the family.

Mom is hoping she gets better quickly, and that whatever happened does not happen again.  The doctors have not yet given a firm feeling on the cause.  Some tests taken today will hopefully give more clear direction.  The treatment of antibiotics seems to be addressing the issue, in any case.

Praise God for his healing and the medical technology that that we have.

Mom recovering, again; similar to last time, but faster

Mom is well on way to recovery.
She is much better than before.  She is talking in short sentences sometimes.  She is sleeping a lot, which is best.
No clear idea the cause yet, but some kind of infection is suspected again.
This time is matching the last hospital visit pattern fairly well, with the difference that recovery is happening two or three times as fast.  By the end of visiting time today, Mom was alert, recognized us, wanted water, and communicated well by voice despite having a very dry throat.

Thanks for your prayers and thoughts,
Howard

Mom (Sally Abbey) in hospital again with similar symptoms

Mom went into the hospital around 7pm last night (5/7), with similar symptoms as last time, but less severe.
She cooperated enough that Dad was able to get here there himself more quickly.
She is currently on antibiotics, and tied down at all four limbs.

Dad will not be able to be their until later in the day on 5/8.

A difficult situation, but since Mom recovered last time, there is confidence that she will be OK this time.
